The Creed

The Apostles Creed is one of the oldest creeds in the Christian tradition. The earliest known mention of this creed came in 390AD in a letter by Ambrose to Pope Siriicus. We mentioned Sunday how the creed allows us to look back on that historical context and celebrate with generations past. We also saw that the creed can help us look at the now. We live in a culture which says ‘believe what you want to believe, there is not absolute truth’. But the creed helps us push against that narrative and claim what we believe boldly. Finally, the words of the creed give us hope for the future to look ahead knowing that God is at work in our world, and the really cool part is- we have a part to play as kingdom builders. And the words of the creed help us to communicate that future hope to those around us. As you read through the scripture texts this week see the pattern of looking back, looking at the now and looking ahead.

Ascension

Jesus’ ascension into heaven proved that his sacrifice on the cross for us, really truly was perfect. All glory, authority, and power was returned to Jesus, who is now seated at His Father’s right hand. It is encouraging for us to know that Jesus physical body, our very flesh and blood, is in heaven. Jesus promises to return to bring us to where He is!

Three important things to consider: 1. Christ’s ascendancy. Jesus rules on the Father’s behalf. We observe something similar with Joseph, when he served under Pharaoh. For us, this requires us to acknowledge Jesus’ lordship over every aspect of creation, over us! 2. Christ’s Spiritual Omnipresence. Jesus is available to everyone, anywhere. He is attentive to our prayers, and he knows, he really knows what life is like, bad and good. 3 Christ’s heavenly ministry. Jesus, our reigning Lord, intercedes for us with the Father, he continually pleads on our behalf and serves us as our advocate. Jesus, together with God the Father, sends God the Holy Spirit so that we can continue to do the work the Father sent him to do. We will do even greater things than he did—because the Holy Spirit works in and through all of us!
